Things I do for English: In other words Quotes from Chapters 1-11!

In all honesty I really didn't feel like reading this book as I'm guessing many of you didn't either but I sorta had to, so I sorta did (I don't consider speed reading actually reading, more of a way to pick out things that might be useful, but usually aren't) So here are some quotes that stuck out to me:

Chapter 1: "Say Lord strike you dead if you don't!" - This was said to Pip by the prisoner when he is trying to get Pip to bring him food and a file. This is Ironic because It is more likely that the prisoner would die before Pip considering the state he was in. He was starving and hurt. This is also ironic because they are in a grave yard next to Pip's deceased family.

Chapter 3: "I had often watched a large dog of ours eating his food; and I now noticed a decided similarity between the dog's way of eating, and the man's. The man took strong sharp sudden bites, just like the dog. He swallowed, or rather snapped up, every mouthful, too soon and too fast; and he looked sideways here and there while he ate, as if he thought there was danger in every direction, of somebody's coming to take the pie away."- This was Pip thinking to himself while watching the man eat. Pip not only makes a connection between the prisoner and the dog because of the way they eat but also because of the way they act and the way Pip views him as no more than an animal and he thinks very low of him. It shows how tentative Pip is to certain things and how he can tell the prisoner does not trust him.

Chapter 5: "I looked at him eagerly when he looked at me, and slightly moved my hands and shook my head. I had been waiting for him to see me, that I might try to assure him of my innocence." - This Quote is significant because it shows Pip's loyalty to even the meanest of people. It shows that even though this man was a prisoner and had threatened Pip's life he still felt a feeling or friendship towards him and did not want the man to think that it was his fault the guards found him, he wanted to make it clear that he was Scott free and that he was still his friend.

Chapter 7: "MI DEER JO i OPE U R KR WITE WELL i OPE i SHAL SON B HABELL 4 2 TEEDGE U JO AN THEN WE SHORL B SO GLODD AN WEN i M PRENGTD 2 U JO WOT LARX AN BLEVE ME INF XN PIP."- My Dear Joe I hope you are quite well I hope I shall soon be able to teach you Joe and then we should be so good and when I am a Prentice to you Joe..... That is all I could make out from what he wrote to Joe. This is important because it is showing you an example of Joe and Pip's relationship and how much they learn want to learn from each other.

Chapter 9: "That ain't the way to get out of being common, old chap. And as to being common, I don't make it out at all clear. You are oncommon in some things. You're oncommon small. Likewise you're a oncommon scholar."- This is after Pip tells Joe that Estella called him common and to Joe, Pip is anything but common. You can tell that Joe thinks very highly of Pip and that even though he has lied and not been super good he still thinks that Pip is extraordinary in everything that he does.

Chapter 11: "Poor dear soul!" said this lady, with an abruptness of manner quite my sister's. "Nobody's enemy but his own!"- This is important because it is what is said to start off the conversation. It also tells us that a mans greatest enemy is himself which could mean his pride or his selfishness or anything like that.
